This qualification trains the practical Lifesaving skills that may be needed by anyone teaching or coaching swimming or another programmed activity in the pool. The qualification is endorsed by the Amateur Swimming Association, the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management and the Institute of Swimming Teachers and Coaches. It is also recognised in ‘Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools’ as being appropriate for those supervising programmed activities.

The award has three compulsory sections, which may be assessed on separate occasions:

  • Section 1: Theory – oral or written test
  • Section 2: Life Support – Adult and Child CPR – practical test
  • Section 3: Water Rescue Test

All sections must be completed within 28 days of the first assessment taking place.

Optional Endorsement

  • Section 4: Life Support – Baby CPR – practical test

Preparation (prior to course starting, usually on the day of the course, see T’s & C’s)

  • read the NRASTC Handbook
  • swim 20 metres on the front
  • swim 20 metres on the back
  • reach the pool floor. The depth selected must be the same as the depth of pool used during teaching sessions

The course externally assessed and will vary in contact hours depending on experience in Life Saving

  • Teachers with no previous experience of lifesaving or life support skills – minimum 12 hours
  • Teachers with some previous experience – minimum 6 hours
  • Teachers renewing the award – minimum 4 hours.
